Seriously? Boycott Israel?

Should Israel Really be Singled Out for Boycott?

Really Want to Boycott Israeli Products?

You sometimes hear the BDS organizations urging followers to boycott Israeli products.  Besides Israeli food products, you can find calls to stay away from Victoria Secret and McDonalds, which have nefarious ties to Israel.

Most people can avoid these products without too much difficulty, although being strictly avoiding Big Macs is somewhat of a burden.

However, if you truly wish to boycott all products with an association with Israel, things might not be as easy as you think.  All of these noble BDS organizations are using computers or cell phones to update you on the next protest or product to boycott.  Are they using a computer with an Intel chip inside?  If so, they are almost certainly using technology designed in Israel.  Did you speak on your cell phone or text your BDS mates?  These are big problems, as Israeli technology is embedded in most cell phones and PCs/laptops.  Did you use Waze to navigate to the protest?  That’s a definite no-no, as it was fully developed in Israel.  (This is a little crass, but also illustrates the point: http://www.jewsnews.co.il/2014/09/15/epic-bds-fail-students-for-justice-in-palestine-using-israeli-wix-com-to-maintain-their-boycott-page-you-stupid-idiots/).

Below are some well-known examples, a small sample of the breakthroughs from Israel that are part of our every-day lives.

Technology:
• Intel Pentium and Celeron computer processor chips from personal computers (desktops, laptops and notebooks) as these were either developed or manufactured in Israel
• Large portions of Microsoft Windows operating systems were developed in Israel
• Mobile phone technology was developed in Israel, where the first mobile phones were manufactured. Mobile chip technology from a single Israeli company has now been installed in over 100 million devices. SMS (Texting) is forbidden as this facility was developed in Israel. No 4G devices can be used, as the chipset is Israeli.
• Disk on Key (USB flash drive) devices originated in Israel
• Waze, the fabulous car navigation application far surpassing standard GPS, is an Israeli company purchased by Google

OK, but who needs technology, as long as we have our health…

Medicine/Healthcare:
• Teva, an Israeli company, is the largest generic pharmaceutical company in the world.
• Given Imaging, an Israeli company, creates the mini-cameras used for colonoscopies or gastro/digestive tract investigations
• An Israeli company has developed a simple blood test that distinguishes between mild and more severe cases of Multiple Sclerosis.
• An Israeli-made device helps restore the use of paralyzed hands. This device electrically stimulates the hand muscles, providing hope to millions of stroke sufferers and victims of spinal injuries.
